Purpose of this Site

Spindrop is the moniker that I operate under for some of my freelance ventures, so it also strikes me as a suitable home for my technical blog. I've been developing web sites since 1995 and blogging before the term blog came into common use. I hated the term initially, but it's so common, that I'm just going to have to live with it. This blog is an attempt to parcel out one of the major facets of my life, web technology, and deliver it unto the world.

My prior blogs have been personal, but mixing technological related posts into a blog that caters to friends and family was a bit messy. My initial instinct was to blog about whatever I feel like. This worked well, it kept people aware of what I was doing, but no amount of tagging and filtering can bring satisfaction. Eventually as my audience became more personal friends and family, most who have very little understanding of web development, I became more reluctant to write about web development specifics.

In an attempt to not lose what information I've learned over the years, I began to attempt to document things. The [wiki] was a bit cold an impersonal and eventually I ran out of steam. So I'm back to what I originally started writing on the web for, web development. I enjoy doing what I do, and I learn something new everyday.

I embrace open source technology, not because I think software should be free, but I think that there is a lot of benefit to open development and collaboration. Much of the writing ideas I have for this blog come from the work I do. Typically, I have an idea I need to implement, I try to find a solution, and if I don't find an easy solution, I piece one together. It's an endeavor that can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.

If I can summarize the process in an easy to follow article, I can save others quite a bit of time. So the purpose of this blog is to provide the information that they can't find elsewhere to do the things they'd like to do. At the very least it can serve as a reference for why and how I do what I do.

I hope people find this site useful, and hope I get feedback steering me where I need to go.
